i read this one yesterday, and it left me thinking! i love how your fiction interacts with mysterious and eerie devices like typewriters and recorders; as human beings we have a fascination with objects that can open portals to more knowledge or intimacy with another person, and i love how you play with it.
your point on legacy shines through the story, and whether or not we have any control in how history - and human hands - paints us. i actually imagined it being fledged out into a novel or novella where grace finds herself forced to interview her dead professor as he seeks to write (or rewrite?) history.
you mentioned this story was inspired by reading a lot on ww2; i have to say, the book thief is one of my favorite reads as a teenager and i was so so impacted by it when i read it back then. this short story has the same feel, maybe that’s why i love your prose and stories so much. they remind me of what i love about stories.
